Blackjack is a very popular American game nowadays played throughout the world.
We're sure you have at least heard of it, if not played it in casinos yet.
But if you somehow haven't, the first thing you need to know about it is that it's incredibly easy to play.
Basic: When playing Blackjack, your objective is to have a hand whose points sum up the nearest possible to 21, or at least nearer to 21 than the banker's hand, but not higher than 21.
|
|
This is why, in some casinos, this game is often called "21", even more frequently than Blackjack. For some, Blackjack is the same game played at home, except for a few differences, such as, for instance, the absence of any dealers.
Even if there are other players present at the table, playing the same game as you are, your only opponent in the game is the dealer; the other players don't count for you.
Blackjack Rules
Before your cards are dealt, you must place a bet, if you're playing in a casino. You should stick with even amounts to ensure a proper 3:2 payout on a blackjack. If you want to, you can sit out rounds.
A card is dealt to each player, face up in turn and then one to the dealer. The dealer's card is face down and it is called a "hole" card. A second card is then dealt, again face up, to each player. Each player decides if he should or shouldn't draw any further cards.

The dealer will start with the player to his left and give out as many cards as the player wishes, one at the time, until the players go bust or pass. The dealer's face down card remains so until the players have completed their hands. If the dealer's hand totals a hard 17 through 21, he must stand. Stand means not having any more cards. |
If his hand is 16 or under, he must keep taking cards until his hand is over 16 or "bust", which means it is higher than 21. If you hit and bust, you have to turn your cards over right away and you lose your wager.
As for the value of the cards, you probably know already that the Kings, Queens and Jacks, also known as face cards or picture cards, count as 10, Aces may count both as 1 or 11, whichever is best for your hand and all the other cards are counted at their numerical value. Jokers are not used in Blackjack.
If, for instance, yours first two cards are an ace and a 10 or face card, you win.
But this is not the only way you can win: you also win when your total tops the dealer's total or if the dealer goes over 21. Do you see how easy it is?
